Reviews are now done with. Within the next few days, you guys will be hanging your artwork on your walls in the Taubman Center and then graduating- the event you've wanted to achieve for so long.

It's been a long journey. For some of you it came easier than others. Some struggled mightily and all were challenged to some degree, whether it was with a difficult instructor, a new medium, a wonky perspective, bureaucracy, bad outputs, impossible deadlines, or even your own internal pressures to achieve. Through it all, you all matured in some way at CCS. I'd like to think that the last few years of your education at CCS was fruitful and you'll one day look back at your time in college as a good one. CCS is by no means perfect but it's what we called home for this leg of the journey. College is just a stepping stone; graduation isn't an end but it should be looked at as the beginning of your careers now.

Congratulations on all of your accomplishments, accolades, achievements great and small, and all of the good times we shared. I couldn't be more proud of all of you guys for the hard work, passion and ambition. It truly has been a pleasure and an honor.

Got word of this from illustrator Francis Vallejo-" http://justillustrating.com/ A new site just launched with the tag-line: "Justillustrating is aimed at amateur illustrators who occasionally are willing to accept orders at low prices. We have to boycott this site, and any attempts for future attempts at this sort of business. Please send them a professional message encouraging them to discontinue their site.....this sort of stuff is getting out of hand. If you are an art student, encourage your instructors to discuss this, and other similar situations, in class. This sort of nonsense doesn't seem to be going away."

Noah is a five year old boy with terminal cancer. He isn't expected to survive til Christmas, and so his family is celebrating Christmas early. His mother says the boy loves Christmas cards, and so they asked family and friends to send cards early for the kid, which turned into a whole internet thing, and so everyone is invited to send a Christmas card to Noah.
As artists, this is an opportunity to make art that can really do a lot to uplift a family going through something very hard.
Also, this is a great opportunity for CCS students to make a quickie Christmas card that has nothing to do with the NFL.
It would only take a half-hour or so to make a nice card for the lad

Hey CCS Illustration seniors
I had an idea for an activity that I would like to organize this year and I want everyone's thoughts on it.
As some of you might know, my dad is handicapped and has really limited mobility, so he spends quite a lot of time sitting in his favorite chair. As such, he makes an ideal model for sketching and he really gets a kick out of posing to be sketched (he's mostly just sitting still anyway).
I was thinking that maybe this year we could cooperate with one of the assisted living facilities in Detroit and put a group together to go over, and ask the residents if they would like to pose for a portrait. It could be a good deal for everyone involved. We get to practice sketching the sort of models we wouldn't ordinarily get in class, and the senior citizens get visitors, and maybe a nice piece of art. We can leave the work with the senior citizens as gifts (with business cards taped to the back of course).
I was picturing us doing it on a Sunday afternoon, We can bring along out own model and do a set of 2 and 5 minute gestures before we fan out and find nice old people to draw. Also we can bring a mac and a scanner so everyone can scan their sketches in and then they would still have a record of the work even if the pieces get given away to the old folks/models.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated, or just let me know that you would be interested in participating.

Dr Sketchy's- Grand Rapids

Last weekend I went to Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School at The Meanwhile bar in Grand Rapids. Dr. Sketchy's is a global franchise, with chapters in cities all over the world, including one in Detroit .
Dr. Sketchy's hosts a different live model every week for artists to draw from. They use unconventional models (cabaret performers, burlesque girls, etc) and since it takes place in a bar, drinking and socializing are encouraged.
Heres how it works (in Grand Rapids anyway) you pay 7 dollars at the door (not bad for 3 hrs of live models) and that gets you in the door plus you get one ballot to enter a contest suggestion. The evening was hosted/timekept by my friend, burlesque girl Vivacious Miss Audacious, who calls the times, arranges the poses, and randomly draws the contest suggestion. Suggestions at this Dr Sketchy's included "best Art Nouveau" and "draw the model as your astrological sign." At the end of each pose, the celebrity judge (who in this case was Corey "Happypants" Ruffin from Super Happy Funtime Burlesque) chooses a winner who recieves a prize such as liquor, a groovy t-shirt, tickets to shows, and other good stuff.
The model at this Dr Sketchy's was Jacinya Sanchez, a drag performer with the persona of a 1950's housewife and mother. She was a real pleasure to draw, and a unique opportunity. Our professors at legit art school never gave us husky drag queens to draw.
I had a great time, and not only will I return, I intend to investigate the Detroit chapter.
note: In the one sketch there is a wee calf in the upper right corner. That's because I had sketched part of that page at the County Fair earlier that week.

National sketchbook project

This is an interesting project where you register, pony up a meager $18, and they send you a Moleskine sketchbook with a theme attached. Your job is to fill it up, send it back and have it be a part of a national traveling exhibit. Just be forewarned that their website's reliability has been spotty from time to time, so check back often if it doesn't seem to respond. The deadline to get your sketchbook is October 1st, 2009 and the deadline for getting the sketchbook done and back to them is December 1st, 2009 for the first exhibit at theArt House Gallery in Atlanta. In February, the show moves to the 303Grand gallery in Brooklyn, NY. The show will also appear in LA at the Art & Shelter Gallery and in St. Louis at the Soulard Art Market. There might also be other venues added but this could be a fun exhibit of your sketchbook skills nationwide.

I've signed up already (although I haven't gotten my sketchbook just yet) and have been assigned the theme "Ahhh! Monster!"

Illustration's New Home Sweet Home? Pt 2

I must have spent too much time playing with construction toys and sneaking into houses under construction because I love when things are being built! Maybe I should have been a carpenter instead. :P

The new Illustration Department:

Rooms 313(A), 313(B), and 313(C)

All the desks and equipment seem to be placed in their appropriate rooms.

The white line on the ground indicates where a critique wall will be. I believe the picture above is Room 313 C. To the right of this picture, next to the blackboard there is a small room that looks like it could be a storage room of some kind. (Prop closet anyone! One could only dream.) Just right of the lockers is a little passage where there is the contraption below.

So we can shoot our work properly!

On the other side of the room is where I assume Room 313 A and B are. If you look closely you can see the old light table and cutting board from the old Illustration Department.

Composition course

I ended up taking a live Composition course with Jason Manley and Coro. It was well worth the $95 that will help conceptart.org with some new online tools and updates. I figured I'd help the community while learning some great info. The course was extremely in depth Jason did a lot with art history and how the master used it while Coro showed how those same rules are useful. Jason and Coro both know their stuff when it comes to Composition. You can still catch it OnDemand although you obviously cannot ask questions but the info covered is still valuable!.......

Vince and Tony @ Malcolm Liepke's Gallery Opening

My favorite painting had already sold, but even if it hadn't, at $8,500 I couldn't have afforded it.

Vince has even more expensive tastes than I do. His painting hadn't sold yet, so I supposed he could have gotten it, but it would have cost $17,000.

Last week Vince Joy and I had the opportunity to go to the gallery opening for Malcolm "Skip" Liepke's solo show at Arcadia Gallery in Soho, NYC. The show had a lot of amazing paintings, and it was very motivating for any artist (Mr. Liepke had already sold over a quarter million dollars worth of art, and it was only opening night).

We both had the opportunity to meet and speak with the artist. He was very friendly and encouraging. Before we left, we couldn't resist getting our pictures taken with the artist and our respective favorite paintings from the show.

Uh huh.

Get rich quick schemes are a side product of the American Dream. Sometimes it seems like everyone wants to believe they have the next million dollar idea and just need to get it in motion to become a wealthy entrepreneur. I get dozens of variations of the previous diatribe from people who find me through the internet or via MAD or some other publication I have a piece in and approach me with these “million dollar” concepts.

The entrepreneur in question has always got a lot of energy and enthusiasm. They are truly convinced they have a highly marketable concept and will be able to put it in every retail store in the country if they can put it together and present it to whoever. Usually these are product ideas of some kind… T-shirts, novelties, etc. Some times they are books or other publications. They are always full of ideas and have plenty of confidence… what they almost always lack is money and experience...."

Communication Arts is one magazine I've had a subscription to since I got out of CCS. It's one of the premier magazines about our industry and probably one of the oldest. To get accepted into their annual competition is gold. Their articles are pretty informative and they talk about some very very topical things about what's going on in the industry today. Just recently we were invited to a reception and re-naming of the Argonaut Building (to the A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education) and here are some pics I took of the interior and exterior of the new addition to our campus. Some people have asked me if it's better or worse and honestly, all I can say is that it'll be different. CCS has grown leaps and bounds since I was a student and this is by far one of the biggest and boldest initiatives the school has undertaken. Not only does it radically change our quaint little campus but as it's often been said, this project could very well be a game changer for the City of Detroit and southeastern Michigan.

Goal of the Blog

You might be asking what this is? Or oh no not another group blog! :) I thought I'd give this a shot, if nothing more than get everyone's contact info but hopefully more. I have been thinking a lot about my final days at CCS and have decided that I want to make the most out of them that I can.

I'm hoping that Senior Studio will be a great place for all of us to connect and interact, if we haven't done much so during the last 3 years. Let's make it a place where we can fling around ideas and showcase a lot of great art.

I know that if we can all work together great work can continue to come out of our department. Perhaps we can all even get some gigs so we can pay off those hefty school loans! Anyways let me know what you guys/girls think about our senior year. I figured we could use this as a starting point, even if the blog ends up dieing because this blog isn't the important part... the relationships, artwork and memories are.

So tell us what you've been up to the last few months, post work, rants, stories, favorite beers (because we will have plenty of those over the next year ;) ), career goals, and so forth.

Also if you don't see someone on the list to post or you don't see yourself, or want another email attached let me know, I will add any CCS Illustration Senior!

Illustration's New Home Sweet Home?

There has been plenty of confusion on where the Illustration Department will end up during this Argonaut shuffle but the move appears to be official, the Walter B. Ford Building. I have spoken with Gil Ashby, Terry Neubacher, and Dave Chow all confirming. We will share the 3rd floor with Animation (previously housing both Graphic Design and Advertising Design.) Home Sweet Home!

I for one am not the happiest on the decision but let's make due with what we have. I am not going to get too upset over the move. I have bigger fish to fry during my senior year. Like getting a flipping gig.

I took a little tour of the 3rd floor of the Walter B. and found that we did have a fair amount of space. Most of the classrooms are just being fixed up now. Here are the pictures:

One of my complaints my freshmen year was that we did not have a hang out area outside of the classroom. I'm happy that we finally have this space.

It appears that we will have two computer labs, one of which will be one of these classrooms above. This room will have, what I've been told, new or upgraded computers. Another will be in the basement which will house the computers from the fourth floor. The other picture above, that is not the computer lab, will be a regular classroom.

Real Lockers?! Finally. It also appears that the lockers from the old Illustration Department have been moved to room 312.

I've been told that Room 312 (the largest room) will be split into three different rooms.

Hopefully they will tear out the carpet and get sinks in all the rooms before we start classes. (rm 312)

And this is the good part. They are trying to work on an area for Senior Studio work room. Gil has spoken with the Dean and asked for room 200. It's better than nothing. I think after we fill it with some desks we can really make it our own.

If we want anything else we are going to have to ask for it. I believe a group voice will be the most effective way to make sure that all of our needs are fulfilled.
